Tutorial 2
Title: Simulation of Renewable Energy Systems
Room: Function Room 4.2
Date: 24 November 2008, Monday
Time: 9.00am to 5.00pm
Abstract
The simulation of a renewable energy system can be performed at three different levels: the device, circuit and system level. At the device level, the semiconductor and stray circuit parameters influence the performance of each component. At the circuit level, the dynamics of interest are caused by the circuit topology and its control system. Device parameters have a smaller influence at this level and therefore can generally be neglected. At the system level, the interaction between system modules is the main dynamic of interest and details such as the topology of a power electronic converter can generally be neglected.
This tutorial will explain the keys to modeling renewable energy system which allows for a rapid simulation. One factor is the choice of simulation package. Simulation programs have different features which are designed to cater to one or more simulation levels. The operation of the simulation engine also impacts the speed of the simulation. For example, packages which implement ideal switching transitions allow significant improvements in speed at the circuit and system levels. The other factor relevant to allowing a rapid simulation is the adoption of good modeling techniques. This tutorial will explain modeling techniques that allow improvements in speed at the circuit and system levels of a renewable energy system since these are typically the levels of interest. A case study, based on a standalone photovoltaic-battery system, will be presented and used to demonstrate the applications of these simulation techniques.
Speakers' Biographies
1. Dr. Jost Allmeling, Founder, Managing Director of Plexim
Jost (born in 1972) holds an MSc in Electrical Engineering from RWTH Aachen and a PhD in the field of power electronics from ETH Zurich. During his research at ETH Zurich he used simulations with PLECS to validate the theoretical findings. He knows the requirements for simulation software from a user perspective and can communicate effectively the techniques and solutions.
2. Orhan Toker, VP Sales & Marketing
Orhan (born in 1962) has joined Plexim in June 2006. He holds an MSc in Physics from the University of Heidelberg and an MBA from GSBA Zurich and the University of Albany, NY. Between 1997 and 2005 he worked as Product Manager at ABB Semiconductors, Lenzburg Switzerland. He is familiar with power semiconductors and their applications.
